The LA Girl’s Guide to Things to Do in Maui

Though it seems like it’s in the middle of the Pacific, the Hawaiian islands are only a quick four-hour flight from LA. If you’ve got a long weekend coming up, consider spending some time beachside in Maui – Hawaii’s second largest island.

Where to Stay

Ka’anapali Beach Resort: The Ka’anapali Beach Resort on the west side of Maui is touted as being the most authentically Hawaiian hotel – and we’d have to agree! You don’t need to step foot off the property to soak in all of the Hawaiian culture.

Book a lei making class, take a wa’a (canoe) paddle tour, or practice your conch shell blow at the hotel to immerse yourself in Hawaiian lore. At the end of your stay you will receive a kukui nut lei as a souvenir – every time you return, they’ll replace a brown bead with a white one!

Where to Eat

Mama’s Fish House: It may be pricey, but Mama’s Fish House is a must – do for your visit to Maui. The seafood is caught fresh and may even include the name of the fisherman who caught it!

Ululani Shave Ice: Trust me – this is no shave ice you’ve ever tasted before. Ululani is one of the most famous spots in Maui. Sample combinations of tons of different flavors and take your creation to the beach!

What to Do

Explore: Adventures await you across the island! Snorkel, take a boat ride, paddle board – there is no lack of beach activity here. If you’re looking for a day-long adventure, consider exploring the road to Hana on the east side of the island.

Luau: Luaus are so much more than grass skirts and pigs on a spit. Hawaiian luaus are celebrations of Hawaii’s culture and history, told through story. Find a dinner theatre location like the Old Lahaina Luau to experience Hawaiian cuisine at the same time.

Nothing: That’s right – absolutely nothing. The laid-back Maui vibe means you won’t be feeling the FOMO as you relax beachside. You’re on island time!
